Cost-Effective Energy

Food And Beverage

The Need

Our customer is the world leader in the construction of fully automated warehouses. Powering such a network of autonomous robots operating at possibly low temperatures requires a large on-going investment in Li-ion batteries and the infrastructure around them. As a result, the cost of ownership of a warehouse equipped with such a network is remarkably high: our client was looking for a more cost-effective solution for their next design.

The Project

By deeply understanding not only our client’s operations but also the mission profile of the robots and their components – ranging from energy recovery, charging technologies, different energy storage options, battery protection – we were able to identify effective solutions and to estimate important parameters related to performance, lifecycle and costs, so that the total cost of ownership could be precisely assessed for the different solutions.

The Benefit

This activity suggested two main strategies with substantial potential to reduce the cost of ownership of the energy storage technology. One as a short-term solution compatible with the current design, and one with an eye towards the future. The latter included a new operational plan to increase the system efficiency and resulted in savings of over 50% against the most optimistic projections.
